Assignment 5A - Identifying Local Opportunities

Below I have listed five problems that I found in articles in my local newspaper, The Gainesville Sun, that could potentially be business opportunities.

#1.) "Here's one way to stop living paycheck to paycheck"

https://infoweb-newsbank-com.lp.hscl.ufl.edu/apps/news/document-view?p=WORLDNEWS&t=pubname%3AGSGB%21Gainesville%2BSun%252C%2BThe%2B%2528FL%2529/year%3A2019%212019/mody%3A0123%21January%2B23&f=advanced&action=browse&format=text&docref=news/1712811927B008C0

The author of the article describes how many government employees are struggling financially due to the government shutdown. She believes that many of these people have not budgeted or saved their money wisely for emergencies. She tells about how her grandmother, who didn't make a lot of money, was able to save enough money to always pay her bills and pay off her house before retiring. Her grandmother taught her to be smart with her money. According to the article, only 41% of people surveyed had a budget. The author describes how a budget can keep you from living "paycheck to paycheck".

The problem presented in this article is the lack of budgeting by many people. These people then struggle financially and are not prepared if they stop receiving a paycheck.

According to this article, the majority of people (59%) do not budget and could use help with financial planning.

#2.) "City OKs plastic bag, Styrofoam ban"

This article discusses how the city of Gainesville recently passed a ban to stop merchants from using plastic bags and Styrofoam containers. This ban will take effect on August 1, and Gainesville is only the second city in Florida to pass such a ban. There will be a fine of $250 for each offense.

The problem presented in this article is the use of plastic bags and Styrofoam containers causing pollution in our waterways and hurting the environment. This ban will encourage merchants to use more environmentally friendly materials.

This problem impacts businesses in the city of Gainesville who currently use plastic bags and Styrofoam containers. The problem of the pollution caused by using these items affects everyone.

#3.) "Artisan Guild says sales lagging, may close doors"

A local art gallery is considering closing its doors due to low holiday sales. Revenue made over the holidays is normally higher and helps carry the gallery for the rest of the year. The article states that more people are now buying art online which is resulting in lower sales.

The problem in this article is the fact that more people are choosing to buy art online which results in lower sales for the art gallery.

This problem is affecting the art gallery in the article, Artisan Guild, and many other art galleries are probably experiencing the same problem.

#4.) "Gainesville, county seek options to end homeless encampment"

The city of Gainesville is facing a problem with a growing homeless population. The city currently has a homeless shelter known as "Grace Marketplace" which houses many homeless people, but an expanding tent encampment outside Grace Marketplace, known as Dignity Village, continues to grow in numbers. The city is concerned about the individuals living in Dignity Village and is trying to come up with a plan to reduce the homeless population and to find a housing solution for them.

The problem addressed in this article is the growing homeless population in Gainesville, Florida, and a lack of housing for these homeless individuals.

This problem affects the homeless people in Alachua County, the city and county government officials, as well as, all the citizens who live in the county.

#5.) "More Americans buy groceries at dollar stores than Whole Foods, report says"

This article talks about the growing number of dollar stores popping up around the nation and the increasing number of Americans who are buying groceries at these types of stores. Many Americans who are looking to save money are shopping for groceries at dollar stores, but healthy, fresh foods are limited or not available at these stores.

The problem is that although groceries are cheaper at dollar stores, the food quality is not as good, and there is a lack of fresh food options, such as fruits and vegetables. The popularity of these dollar stores is also putting many local grocery stores out of business. This is not good for the health of Americans.

The problem affects all Americans, but especially those with lower incomes and less money to spend on healthy, fresh food. Also, it can affect those who live in rural locations where a dollar store might be their only option for groceries.

Assignment 3A - Your Entrepreneurship Story

My Entrepreneurship Story

Hand, Business Plan, Business, Designer, Design

I have been exposed to entrepreneurship quite a bit in my adult life. As a teenager, I helped out in the office of a small farm equipment rental business. Currently, my husband runs his own computer/technology repair business out of our home on a part-time basis. I help out a little with his business, mostly assisting when customers drop off or pick up their devices. My husband has a true entrepreneurial spirit and is always thinking of new business ideas. The majority of entrepreneurial experience comes from working with my dad in his automotive repair business. He started his own business back in 2013 after being employed most of his adult life in the automotive industry. It was a brave leap for him, and I have been assisting him from day 1. I helped him with the initial planning and start up, and I still help him today with his accounting and other office duties. These experiences have exposed me to some of the highs and lows of being an entrepreneur, but I think it is definitely worth the effort to be your own boss.

I am looking forward to learning more from this class. I am taking ENT3003 as a requirement for my business degree, and I hope to learn many things that will help me with my real-world entrepreneurship experiences.

Assignment 2A - Bug List

The following are 20 examples of unmet needs in my life (aka things that bug me!)

  1. Unsecured credit card payment at the gas pump, therefore I have to spend more time going inside to pay cash.
    • WHY DOES IT EXIST? Criminals are coming up with ways to steal credit card information faster than companies can come up with ways to secure their devices.
  2. My socks (many different brands) get holes too easily.
    • WHY DOES IT EXIST? Many socks are made too thin, especially in the toe area.
  3. Alarm clock is too easy to accidentally turn off.
    • WHY DOES IT EXIST? The button to turn off the alarm is right beside the snooze button and too easy to hit, especially when I’m sleepy and disoriented.
  4. Dishwasher doesn’t dry dishes effectively.
    • WHY DOES IT EXIST? The process dish washers use for drying the dishes isn’t effective.
  5. Lack of parking on the university campus.
    • WHY DOES IT EXIST? There is not enough dedicated parking spots on campus. Maybe this is done to encourage use of public transportation?
  6. The local kindergarten car pick-up line in unorganized, stressful, and potentially dangerous.
    • WHY DOES IT EXIST? There is not enough room for the cars to line up, causing many cars to park along the highway blocking traffic.
  7. Not enough restaurant options in my town.
    • WHY DOES IT EXIST? Many new restaurants have been unsuccessful in my town. I think that is discouraging for new businesses.
  8. Amazon not delivering by the specified time.
    • WHY DOES IT EXIST? Sometimes their 2-day Prime shipping times are unachievable due to unreliable delivery companies and drivers.
  9. Not knowing when USPS packages arrive at my house.
    • WHY DOES IT EXIST? There is no available system through USPS to notify me when they delivers packages.
  10. Bank closing before 5:00pm.
    • WHY DOES IT EXIST? They probably close before 5:00pm on their slower business days to save money.
  11. Having to take my smelly garbage to the local waste management site.
    • WHY DOES IT EXIST? There is no garbage pick-up service in the area where I live.
  12. Lack of communication with my child’s teachers.
    • WHY DOES IT EXIST? Teachers do not make their cell phone numbers available to parents, and it can take too much time to communicate via email.
  13. Vehicles not being designed in a way to make servicing easier.
    • WHY DOES IT EXIST? Automotive manufacturers are not concerned with the amount of time it will take to service a vehicle. Less service time would equal less expensive repairs.
  14. Lack of healthy food options at quick service restaurants.
    • WHY DOES IT EXIST? Healthy food is generally more expensive and the demand may not be high enough.
  15. Medical insurance being too expensive.
    • WHY DOES IT EXIST? There is a lack of competition in the marketplace and medical costs are very high.
  16. Dog waste bags that do not control odors.
    • WHY DOES IT EXIST? They are not made thick enough or with odor absorbing materials. I prefer environmentally friendly brands, but the “green” brands I have tried seem to be worse at controlling odors.
  17. Movie theatre prices being too high.
    • WHY DOES IT EXIST? Not enough competition exists and many people are willing to pay the high prices.
  18. Lack of beneficial after-school activities for children.
    • WHY DOES IT EXIST? Many after-school activities are too concerned with babysitting and entertaining kids until their parents arrive, and not concerned with providing beneficial classes, tutoring, and experiences for kids.
  19. Soup being served extremely hot at Subway.
    • WHY DOES IT EXIST? Every time I have ordered soup at Subway, it was served scolding hot and not edible without adding ice. Maybe this is just my Subway?
  20. No food delivery options in my town.
    • WHY DOES IT EXIST? Maybe the demand is not high enough in my area, but there are many nights that I have wished I could order in.

I found this assignment very challenging, mostly because I am not a very observant person. Though I do experience things that “bug” me everyday, I have never taken the time to make a note of them and to think about possible solutions for these annoyances. I think this will change going forward. From now on, whenever I experience these problems or annoyances, I will try to think of why it exists and ways I can solve it.
